This is some sample language to be used in calling or emailing your Legislators. Feel free to use this language, change as you wish or just create your own wording:
My name is _______ and I live in your district at ___________. As you may be aware, to go to physical therapy you currently must have a prescription from a doctor to attend physical therapy. Texas is one of 6 States in the United States that does not allow direct access to see a physical therapist for treatment. The Physical Therapy profession in Texas, and myself personally, thinks it is time for Texans to have the same access to physical therapy services as the rest of the country.
HB-29, as currently written is summarized as follows:
A Physical Therapist may treat a patient for an injury or condition without referral if the PT:
is licensed for at least one year
covered by professional liability insurance
has either a Doctoral degree or 30+ hours training in differential diagnosis
A Physical Therapist may treat a patient for 30 days, after which a referral is necessary from a doctor before continuing with treatment.
I feel like this bill provides very reasonable safeguards to assure that Texans have direct access to a Physical Therapist and ensures that, when appropriate, a patient will be referred to their PCP or other practitioner when needed.
I am strongly in favor of what is before us at this time in House Bill-29 and am asking for you to support this bill preferably by being a co-sponsor or co-author.
